The family relocated from Baltimore to Edmonds, Washington when she was six years old Her father Jack was sociologist who worked at the University of Washington as a vice-president of internal communications and then headed the Washington Biotechnology and Biomedical Association as well as Karen, her mom Karen was a special education teacher at Seaview Elementary School located in Edmonds. Faris is a sister to an elder brother Robert who is a sociologist and also works as a professor in the University of California Davis. At a young age, her parents supported her as she pursued an acting profession. Faris performed her first professional performance when she reached the age of nine. which was performed at the Seattle Repertory Theater. Then she went on to play Scout in a play of To Kill a Mockingbird, at Issaquah Washington, Village Theatre and then as the title in Heidi as well as Rebecca In Our Town. As a student at Edmonds Woodway High school, Faris appeared in a commercial for frozen yogurt on TV.
